What is a rebus puzzle?
A rebus puzzle uses pictures to spell a word or phrase. Kids say each picture out loud, stick the sounds together, and the answer pops out — 🐄 + 👦 = "cowboy". They're a favourite in classrooms and on car trips because they need no reading skill to start, just a willingness to say silly sounds and listen for the word hiding inside.
For kids they quietly build three things at once: phonological awareness (hearing sounds in words), an understanding of compound words, and the stubborn kind of problem-solving where you keep trying until it clicks.

How to make rebus puzzles harder or easier
The trick with rebus puzzles is matching the difficulty to the child. For a 4- or 5-year-old, stick to short, familiar compound words with a picture for each half — "sunflower", "starfish", "cowboy". For a 7-to-10-year-old, layer in near-sounds (a picture of a bee for the "b" sound, a picture of an eye for "I") and longer words, so the puzzle needs a second and third guess.
